TogglePool coping installation is not the same as setting pavers. The two processes share some materials — stone, mortar, grout — but the structural requirements, the mortar bed, the overhang detail, and the waterproofing considerations are different enough that treating them the same way is how expensive mistakes happen.
This guide walks through the complete travertine coping installation process: from substrate prep through final sealing. If you’re a contractor working with natural stone for the first time, this covers what’s different about coping compared to standard tile work. What You Need Before You Start
Materials
- Travertine coping pieces (2″ thickness — not 1¼”)
- Polymer-modified thinset mortar rated for exterior, pool-adjacent applications
- Unsanded or sanded grout matched to coping fill color (epoxy grout strongly preferred for wet zones)
- Penetrating impregnating sealer rated for natural stone
- Grout release / stone sealer for pre-grouting protection
- Flexible caulk in matching color for expansion joints

- Notched trowel (¾” x ¾” for large-format coping)
- Rubber mallet
- Level — 4′ minimum, 6′ preferred
- Tape measure and chalk line

Step 1 — Inspect and Prepare the Pool Beam
The pool beam is the structural concrete ledge at the top of the pool wall that the coping bonds to. Before any mortar goes down, it needs to be clean, structurally sound, and at the correct height relative to the deck.
Check for any existing coping adhesive, paint, or sealant residue. Grind or chip it off completely — thinset won’t bond reliably to coated or contaminated surfaces. Check for cracks in the beam. Hairline surface cracks are cosmetic; cracks wider than 1/16″ that show movement need to be repaired before installation.
The beam’s top surface should be roughly level — within ¼” across its length is acceptable before mortar is used to fine-tune. Major dips or humps need to be ground down or built up with mortar before setting coping, because the coping overhang makes it impossible to shim or adjust after the fact.
If the pool has a fiberglass shell, confirm that the coping bond won’t interfere with the shell’s flex characteristics. Some fiberglass pool manufacturers specify flexible adhesive rather than rigid thinset at the bond point — check the shell documentation before you pour anything.
Step 2 — Establish Your Layout Lines
Snap a chalk line along the inside edge of the pool beam — the line that defines where the coping face drops into the pool. This is your reference line for the overhang measurement. Standard overhang is 1½” to 2″ past the beam face into the pool.
Dry-lay the coping along the entire perimeter before mixing any mortar. This step catches cut problems before they become set-in-stone problems. On curved pool sections, fan the pieces to test the joint spacing. On corners, plan your miter cuts now. Identify which pieces will need cuts and mark them clearly.
For a 16×24 coping on a rectangular pool, plan your layout so cuts fall at the least visible location — typically the back corners rather than the main visible run along the primary view of the pool.
Step 3 — Mix and Apply the Mortar Bed
Use a polymer-modified thinset designed for large-format exterior stone. Standard thinset without polymer modifier doesn’t have sufficient bond strength or flexibility for an exterior pool environment where thermal cycling, pool chemistry, and moisture penetration are all constant stressors.
Mix to a peanut butter consistency — thick enough to hold a ridged notch when troweled, thin enough to spread without tearing. Apply to the pool beam using a ¾” x ¾” notched trowel, covering the full beam width. Back-butter each coping piece as well, especially for 16×24 pieces where full coverage matters for structural support at the overhang.
Full mortar coverage beneath coping — back-buttered and bed-troweled — is what keeps an overhanging piece from cracking under load. Voids are where failures start.
Set each piece into the mortar bed and tap with a rubber mallet to collapse the ridges and achieve full contact. Use a 4′ level to check each piece and across adjacent pieces. Coping that’s set out of level directs water toward the pool shell rather than away from it — a detail that causes bond beam water intrusion over time.
Step 4 — Setting the Overhang and Slope
The coping should overhang the pool face by 1½” to 2″ — consistent across the entire run. Inconsistent overhang is one of the most visible installation defects once the pool is filled and you’re looking at the water’s edge from the inside.
The top surface of the coping should slope slightly away from the pool — roughly 1/8″ per foot — so that water on the deck surface drains away from the pool edge rather than running back down the bond beam. This is a subtle slope, but it matters for long-term bond beam protection.
On the pool side, the coping face should be plumb — vertical, not angled in or out. Check plumb as you set each piece.
Step 5 — Cutting Curves and Corners
Straight cuts are straightforward with a wet saw and diamond blade. Curves require either kerfing (multiple parallel cuts to allow the stone to flex slightly around a gentle curve) or cutting individual pieces to the curve radius using a template. For tight curves on free-form pools, individual piece cutting is the only reliable approach.
Inside corners are mitered at 45° on both pieces, then caulked rather than grouted. Never grout inside corners on coping — the rigid grout joint will crack as the structure moves seasonally. The same applies to the joint where coping meets the deck surface at the back edge: caulk that joint with a flexible sealant matched to the grout color.

Step 6 — Allow Cure Time, Then Grout
Allow the mortar to cure for a minimum of 24 hours before grouting — 48 hours in humid or cold conditions. Walking on newly set coping before the mortar has cured shifts pieces out of alignment and breaks the bond.
Before grouting, seal the face of the travertine if you didn’t pre-seal before installation. This is the last chance to protect the stone face from grout staining. Apply sealer, let it absorb, and wipe the excess before it dries.
For the joint between coping pieces on top and at the pool face: use an epoxy grout in a color matched to the travertine fill. Epoxy grout is more resistant to pool chemicals, chlorine, and UV than standard cement grout and won’t require periodic regrouting the way cement grout does in wet outdoor applications. Mix according to manufacturer instructions — epoxy grout has a shorter working time than cement grout, so mix only what you can use in 20–30 minutes.
Apply grout with a float, pack the joints fully, and clean with a damp sponge before the epoxy begins to set. Epoxy residue that dries on the stone face is significantly harder to remove than standard grout haze.
Step 7 — Final Sealing
Once the grout has cured (follow manufacturer spec — typically 72 hours for epoxy), apply a penetrating impregnating sealer to the entire coping surface including the grout joints. This is not a topical coating — it soaks into the stone and the grout and creates a barrier against pool chemicals, calcium buildup, and organic staining without altering the surface appearance.

Plan to reseal the coping every 12–18 months in a pool environment. The chemical and UV exposure at the pool edge is significantly more aggressive than a covered patio or indoor surface. An annual walk-around to check for grout cracking, coping movement, or sealer wear is worthwhile maintenance.
Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
- Using 1¼” coping instead of 2″: The thinner material can’t support the overhang load and will crack. Always spec 2″ for pool coping.
- Grouting inside corners: Rigid grout cracks as the structure moves. Caulk all inside corners and the coping-to-deck back joint.
- Skipping the pre-seal: Grout hazing on textured travertine is extremely difficult to remove. Pre-sealing costs 20 minutes and prevents hours of remediation.
- Setting without full mortar coverage: Voids beneath the overhang create unsupported cantilever sections that crack under foot traffic or furniture weight.
- Inconsistent overhang: Measure from the pool beam face, not from the inside edge of the pool. Mark the overhang dimension on every piece before setting.
